Office to Evening - How to Work a Sheath Dress

I love the idea of a beautiful work dress that transitions perfectly to your off-hours.  These dresses are the cornerstone of my wardrobe, and should be for any woman because they are complete timesavers.  This dress from Nordstrom is a great deal right now and you will get so much wear out of it.  Here are ideas to transition the look seamlessly from work to evening:

Runway to Real Way- Carlos Miele Fall 2012

Carlos Miele Fall 2012 Ready-to-Wear

I loved the Carlos Miele Fall 2012 Ready-to-Wear collection and thought it had a lot of great ideas that can spice up your spring/summer wardrobe right now.  A wide, gaucho inspired leather belt with gold hardware will look fabulous paired with a cream blouse and tan pencil skirt for work.  For evening, swap in a bigger hoop earring, a curve-hugging skirt, and a seriously sexy summer sandal with interlacing straps or tiny leather cutouts.  There are a lot of great neutral belts in stores right now (see others here and here) that will really freshen up your work and weekend look.  These belts are so versatile and will carry you through the summer and into next fall.

Evening Wear Lessons from the 2012 Oscars

Stacey Kiebler

How can I put this delicately...  I was very underwhelmed by the fashions at this year's Academy Awards show.  Simply put, I don't think that the women dressed to the occasion, which bestows Hollywood's highest honor in an iconic evening event.  Above is my one and only best dressed of the night- Stacey Kiebler who was pure perfection head-to-toe in Marchesa.

When dressing for any event for which pictures will be saved for a lifetime, whether it be an awards ceremony, wedding, or your senior prom, it's important to keep in mind timeless standards of elegance and beauty.  It's better to go with a classic, elegant look that will stand the test of time, than to indulge in the whacky straight-off-the runway trends of the moment (e.g. peplum skirts.)  For example, you can never go wrong with a gorgeous, body-hugging gown with one standout detail (in this case, the stunning, shimmering gold fabric that perfectly complements Stacey's golden skin and hair.)  When dressing for a really big event where you will be photographed for posterity, keep it elegant, keep it simple, and keep it timeless- take a note from Hollywood sirens of the past whose photos still look gorgeous and stylish today!  Here are some more examples of timelessly beautiful DO's from year's past:

Super Chic Weekend

When the weekend comes around we all want to be comfortable and relaxed, but wouldn't it be great to have comfort AND a little glamour?  The key to looking great on your days off is to pick coordinating separates in one color palette.  That way you know that you can roll out of bed on Sunday morning, throw on your favorite leggings, top, jacket and scarf and be out the door looking amazingly pulled together.  Here are some great separates with a hint of glamour that will carry you through your weekend errands, shopping, and brunch looking great.  Happy Friday!

Office to Evening

Reader question:

Sometimes I go to work and then in the evening I'm going out.  I don't have time to go home and change, so what outfit will be both suitable for work and a happy hour or party?

The 5 best ways to flawlessly transition your work look to an evening appropriate ensemble are as follows:
1.  Wear a fun dress, skirt, or top that can be worn under a jacket to work.  It's easy to then remove the jacket for a more revealing look that is evening appropriate.  The dress pictured above is perfect because it has a cap sleeve and can be worn without the jacket at work.
2.  Change your shoes- switch out your work shoe for a sexier evening shoe/sandal.
3.  Change your purse- carry a small clutch in your larger work bag, and then take the clutch with you in the evening and leave your bag at work.
4.  Add a beautiful evening accessory that you wouldn't normally wear to work.  For example, a great pair of chandelier earrings, a beautiful statement necklace or bracelet.  A little jewelry goes a long way to transitioning your look from day to evening.
5.  Update your makeup.  Take 15 minutes to refresh your makeup and add a little extra liner, shadow, or lipstick (pick one area of your face to highlight.)

Pictured above is a perfect work sheath that you can dress up for evening in 2 minutes by switching in the shoe and clutch and adding a fabulous piece of statement jewelry like the silver horn cuff.  These small changes really switch up the look and make it glam and edgy for evening.

How to Dress Up a Black Suit

A few weeks ago I discussed how to dress up a basic navy suit for the office (see this post.)  Today, let's look at how to dress up that black suit everyone has in their closet and make it feel fresh and new.  In winter, black looks chic paired with other neutrals like white, cream and gray.  Choose a beautiful blouse with an interesting fabric or neck detail to add visual interest to a basic black suit.  Scarves are another wonderful way to add interest to your suit, and can be worn over any neutral shell top.  A longish scarf can even give the look of a beautiful blouse when tucked into a buttoned jacket.  Nordstrom has an extensive selection of really beautiful scarves that would work well for any work environment.  For an after-work date, simply remove your jacket, switch from your work bag to an evening clutch, and add an additional piece of jewelry to be ready for a night on the town!

Tuesday Morning Inspiration

3.1 Phillip Lim Fall 2012 Ready-To-Wear Collection

It's easy to fall into a rut style-wise with your work wardrobe, especially in winter.  I was so inspired by last week's New York Fashion Week Fall 2012 collections that I'd like to continue the conversation this week about how to translate these looks to your current wardrobe.  The 3.1 Phillip Lim Collection has so many wearable ideas that would work perfectly for any woman's work wardrobe right now.  The idea of mixing navy blue with black, incorporating interesting textures like tweed, and black and white color blocking are fresh ways to update your winter wardrobe of basic black.  Complete the look with a classic black pointy-toe pump and a structured bag for a modern-elegant look.  Here are a few ideas inspired by the runway look above to up the ante on your workday chic!
