What to Wear for a Weekday Lunch Date

Reader question:

I have a date planned this week with a new guy I really like.  What can I wear that will be cute enough for the date, but still appropriate for the rest of the day at my office?

If you want to look stunning for your date but still appropriate for a 2 p.m. meeting, a sheath or wrap-style dress in a bold hue is your best bet.  Guys really respond to both color and curve-hugging dresses, so this combination is sure to flatter and impress.  This look transitions seamlessly from office to date by simply switching your conservative office pumps out for a strappy heeled sandal.  Add a pretty bracelet, earrings, or necklace and switch your work bag for a more delicate handbag and you'll be date-ready in under 5 minutes.  Here are other options that would also work well for a weekday lunch date:

*Style tip: Pair this dress with a light black jacket for the office.  You can remove the jacket for your date to expose your shoulders for a gorgeous, fresh spring look.

Bright Ideas for Black Addicts

For day:

Reader question:

I usually wear a lot of black, and I want to brighten up my look for spring with more colors.  I have an olive complexion with dark hair, and a curvy figure.  Can you recommend ways to incorporate some of the bright spring colors in stores into my wardrobe for day or a night out?  I usually shop at Macy's and Lord and Taylor, so if you could show items from those stores that would be helpful!

There are so many gorgeous colors to try for spring, so you'll have lots of options to choose from!  For your coloring, any rich, saturated jewel tone will look amazing on you.  Colors like turquoise, sapphire blue, and fuchsia will complement your olive skin perfectly.  If you really want to up the wow factor for a night out, choose a dress that accentuates your curves.  Pair a brightly colored cocktail dress with a beautiful metallic clutch, accessories, and nude heels to complete the look.  The dresses linked above and the turquoise dress from this post would all be great options for a date night look.  Here are some other good picks to add some sizzle to your next night out on the town:

Where'd You Get Those Wedges??

Wedges are the perfect summer shoe because they form the ideal hybrid between a flat sandal and a stiletto heel.  With the height of a heel and the (relative) stability of a flat soled shoe, they enable you to walk on the most treacherous cobblestone streets and still rock a high heel.  However, it can be difficult to find the right wedge with the correct platform to heel ratio.  In my opinion, it's most flattering if you can get a little extra height, without feeling like you are tottering at 7 feet tall.  Here are my favorite wedges of the season, which fit the bill without being overwhelming:

Make a Statement! Jewelry For Spring

This spring, statement jewelry is a wonderful way to dress up your casual pieces to make them feel fresh and new.  The best part is that there are great options available at every price point, especially at The Limited where jewelry is 40% off today.  Wear these with your favorite sundress, cotton tee or button-down shirt for a look that is fun and springy.  I'd pair these with a simple white ballet-neck top, a flouncy spring skirt, and wedges to up the flirt factor.  Hope everyone has a fabulous weekend!!

Dress Up Your Work Look with Fun Blouses

It's so easy to fall into a rut with your work attire, and end up looking tired and uninspired.  The good thing about injecting new life and energy into your work clothes is that it can reinvigorate you and make your day at the office feel more fun and purposeful.  This spring, a great way to easily update your work wardrobe is by indulging in some of the beautiful silk blouses currently in stores.  Zara has a fantastic selection of elegant blouses at the moment which would work well with any of your current work basics like neutral trousers, skirts, and blazers.  Wear these un-accessorized or with a great statement necklace to breathe new life into your work look!

How to Wear Scarves

Reader question:

Can you talk about the right way to wear scarves?  I just bought this scarf from Nordstrom and I'm wondering how to wear it.

Scarves are the best way to dress up any outfit in a flash.  They are one of my favorite accessories because they're so easy to throw on and instantly add style to even the most basic jeans and tee ensemble.  There are many ways to wear scarves, but there are two variations that I find are really easy, quick, and consistently look great.  First is to loop the scarf once around your neck (called the "modern one loop" in the video below and shown above on L.C.)  The second is to fold the scarf in half length-wise, wrap it around your neck, and thread the tail through the loop you created at one end (called the "european loop" in the video.)  You can also simply drape the scarf on either side of your neck for a very cool rocker-inspired look (called the "classic drape" in the video.)  These variations are so versatile and always look thoroughly modern and non-fussy.  I wear scarves like this on casual days with a jersey top, skinny jeans, and a great flat shoe.  It's a no-fail, easy-elegant casual look!  In winter, use a chunkier knit scarf and sweater, and a light silky scarf and top for warmer months.  For work, I think a scarf looks great knotted simply and tucked into your jacket as discussed here.

If you're looking for more inspiration, this video has a pretty jaw-dropping array of scarf-tying variations- as many as you'll need in a lifetime, I'm sure!  And finally, here is some additional inspiration from Kim K., a lady who loves her scarves as much as I do:

Sizzling Summer Shorts and Minis

Reader question:

Can you please make a post on shorts and mini skirts?  It's getting warm and I'm planning on shopping for summer clothes soon.

Shorts and mini skirts can be tricky to wear because they're not very forgiving for your legs.  I personally don't wear shorts because my legs are curvy and I also have very pale skin.  But if your legs are one of your favorite assets and you love to show them off- by all means flaunt it!  Keep your legs in tip-top shape by using a little *carefully applied* self-tanner or self-tanning lotion.  Also, if you have any blemishes you can hide them with a little makeup (it's not just for your face ladies!)  I believe Makeup Forever has makeup that is made for covering scars, blemishes, and even tattoos all over your body (I'd confirm with the ladies at Sephora which type/shade is best for you.)  Once your legs are looking amazing like those pictured above, these shorts and minis will have you looking HOT this summer!

*This pair is also very cute

I love the look of a crisp, tailored pair of shorts for day.  These would be perfection paired with a simple thong sandal, button-down shirt, classic sunglasses and a gorgeous clutch for a glam but casual day look.

Dress the look up for a casual evening out by adding a fun wedge sandal:

For a dressier evening out, add sequins to your shorts or mini for a really hot summer look:
