What to Wear to a Professional Conference

When attending a professional panel event, conference, breakfast meeting or roundtable discussion, it's good to keep a few tips in mind:

1) Business Professional Dress is always appropriate.  These events are completely formal, especially in DC, and you need to look your best.  You are representing yourself and/or your organization so make sure you are dressed for the occasion.  When in doubt a suit jacket and skirt or slacks combo always works.

2) Layers are your friend!  Meeting rooms are always either too cold or too hot, and usually tend to be freezing.  Wear a jacket or at least long sleeves to ensure you'll be comfortable throughout the conference.

3) Keep it conservative.  These events always bring together a wide range of age groups and levels of seniority, so it's wise to dress on the conservative side.  This isn't the time for fashion statements, short skirts or wild makeup.  Finally, be you!  That said, you don't want to disappear into a sea of head-to-toe black and navy suits.  Pick ONE piece with a little pizzaz to bring some personality to your look.  A great way to do this is with a bold blazer - I am loving the rich red, safari, eyelet, and even the ikat print jacket below! If a fun jacket isn't your taste, go with a brightly colored blouse underneath your jacket for a pop of color, or a colorful scarf or necklace.

Editor's note: I am so honored to be on the host committee of the upcoming "Women Leading the Future" Conference being held this Saturday, May 5th in Chevy Chase, MD.  If you are looking for a wonderful opportunity to network and learn from some truly inspiring professional women don't miss this event!  Click here for conference information and registration.

What to Wear to a Baby Shower

When it comes time for a Baby Shower or other religious rite of passage, a fun, summery, and ladylike day dress is your best bet.  I am LOVING all of the great options at Macy's right now- there are so many to choose from!  Avenue also has a lot of pretty options for curvy ladies.  This is the perfect time to break out your summer florals, delicate prints **check out the pineapples on the third dress - LOVE!**, and fresh spring colors.  As you can see I am partial to a delicate belt at the waist, which is very figure flattering and also gives the look a complete, polished feel.  Happy Friday everyone!

What to Wear to a Bridal Shower

I am dedicating this week's posts to special event attire, as there are so many celebrations that tend to pop up this time of year!  Wedding season is officially upon us, and along with the gilded invitation comes a bevy of festive parties you'll need to look your best for.  First comes the bridal shower.  This is the girliest of events and will typically consist of all women, so you can't go wrong with a great feminine day dress.  Here are some good bets:

A Day at the Races

The Virginia Gold Cup is now just a couple weeks away, and I personally want to go just to dress up for a day at the races!  There's something about a day filled with casual glamour, hats, and the refined sport of horse racing that sounds wonderfully appealing.  If you're off to the races this year, here are some picks that will have you feeling - and looking - perfectly cool and casually glam.  Pair with your favorite delicate flat sandal (or wedges if you're feeling daring), festive earrings or delicate bangles, sunglasses and a great hat for winning style.  This summer, shades of turquoise, yellow, tangerine and bright white feel fresh and new.

When You Want To Stand Out (In A Good Way)

Reader question:
I'm always looking for something unique- especially tops and skirts with detail.  Something that will make you stand out that not everyone would wear.  Can you show some clothes with an interesting design?

When you want to stand out from the crowd, adding interesting color and texture to your wardrobe is key.  This summer, neons are a great way to go for an interesting look that not everyone will be wearing.  A bright citrus dress or jeans paired with simple, sleek black accessories is eye-catching in an elegant, understated way.  Playing with fun silhouettes is another great way to subtly switch up your look.  Wear tailored shorts for a night out with black pumps or sandals instead of the usual skirt or dress.  Little details like this can go a long way to creating a unique look.  Finally, one of my favorite tips for getting an exclusive look is to shop abroad- putting in a little effort to shop foreign retailers either online or when you are on vacation ensures you'll have a one of a kind outfit.  I am loving the Werelse for Mango collection created by super stylish fashion bloggers Chiara Ferragni, Andy Torres and Carolina Engman- fabulous!  (See below and view the complete collection here.)  Have a great weekend everyone!!:)

How to Dress Your Look Up or Down In a HURRY

Add a Statement Necklace for Instant Glam:

I have been to quite a few after-work events lately where even I- the most prepared dresser you'll ever meet- have been surprised to be under or over-dressed.  In a town where people frequently either wear their work clothes to evening social functions or dress for "the club" at a happy hour, I'd like to discuss how to dress your look up or down at a moment's notice.  That way, you will never feel ambushed by a step-and-repeat photo-op when you are in business casual attire, or feel awkward when friends show up in work clothes and you're ready for the party.  Here are simple tricks that can take your look from night to day and back again *in a HURRY* when you realize you didn't get the style memo everyone else did...  You can carry all of these items in a medium sized handbag like the one below, and either add or subtract to your outfit as needed to suit the event!

Summer Weddings Survival Guide

It's hard to know what to wear to weddings- every wedding is different, and it's important to keep in mind the venue, the weather, and most importantly the bride's wishes.  Here is a guide of what to wear to different types of weddings, but when in doubt simply ask the bride what she's expecting.  Some other good rules to live by:  1) Stick to a nice dress or pant suit in a quality eveningwear fabric.  2) It's a celebration, so wear some color!  Don't wear black or white unless the bride specifically requests it.  3) Have fun and wear what makes you feel fabulous and ready to party!!
